Bring learning alive by using primary sources with local relevance! Cumbria Archives and other services' learning resources and teaching packs are available electronically to support the use of archive material within teaching:

  • Medicine through the Ages: online compilation of sources, to allow thematic or chronological use 
  • Bygone Transport: online gallery of historic photographs  
  • Cumbria and its connections with the history and legacy of the Slave Trade (PDF, 3.9MB): extensive teachers' pack illustrated with actual examples from Cumbrian archives, with suggestions for use in primary and secondary settings, produced in conjunction with Cumbria Creative Partnerships and other partners.  Please contact Whitehaven Archive Centre (email link) if you would like access to the accompanying images for this pack. 
  • Time Morphs: then and now photographs from around Cumbria (allowing exploration of change over time, and possibilities for ICT/creativity within local environment)
  • John Redhead, Victorian Criminal: primary source resource (KS2 and KS3) intended to allow pupils to work with ICT in History, to access materials from the internet, and to synthesise a cohesive account from diverse original source material
  • Cumbria at War 1939-45: fully illustrated role play exercise for secondary schools (contextual information for pupils, archive images and sound clips)
