West Cumberland and the Furness Area hosted many hundreds of Belgian refugees during World War One. Most worked in the shipyards at Barrow-in-Furness or in coal mines at Whitehaven. The following give mentions of both individual refugees from local newspapers and records at Barrow Archive Centre and Barrow Library.
